Why Light-Based AI Chips Landed Ayar Labs a $150M Investment

Ayar Labs secured $150 million in a recent funding round to expand light-based AI chip production. This gives them the support needed to solve copper interconnect bottlenecks and enable hyperscale AI clusters.

In addition, the investment highlights a decisive shift toward optical infrastructure in global data centers as artificial intelligence workloads continue to grow at scale.

    Ayar Labs Secures $150M Funding

Ayar Labs announced an additional $150 million in September 2026, extending its Series E round to $650 million. Earlier in March, the company raised $500 million led by Neuberger Berman, with AMD, Nvidia, Intel, and MediaTek participating.

In addition, the new capital accelerates product development, validation, and high-volume manufacturing of its TeraPHY optical engine and co-packaged optics solutions.

Furthermore, Ayar Labs also expanded globally by opening a Bengaluru Design Center, strengthening engineering capacity alongside teams in the United States and Taiwan.

    Breaking the Copper Bottleneck

Copper interconnects degrade over distance, consume excessive power, and overheat when linking thousands of GPUs. As AI clusters scale, copper blocks progress. Ayar Labs replaces copper with fiber optics, enabling larger clusters with improved efficiency.

As CEO Mark Wade stated, “Copper interconnect is becoming the limiting factor for AI scale-up. This funding allows us to move faster on manufacturing-ready co-packaged optics at scale.” Consequently, copper’s failure creates urgency, and optical adoption emerges as the logical solution.

Shaping the Future of AI Infrastructure

The investment signals a significant shift in AI infrastructure. Optical interconnects allow rack-scale deployments, reduce energy costs, and support massive foundation models. Strategic backers like Wiwynn view co-packaged optics as foundational for next-generation data centers.

William Lin, Wiwynn’s CEO, explained, “We see a clear path to new architectures that reduce the power and complexity limits of copper interconnects.” As copper falters, optical adoption rises, reshaping how hyperscale data centers operate.

    Scaling Light-Based AI Chips Worldwide

Ayar Labs has now transitioned from research to commercialization. The Bengaluru hub complements existing teams, creating end-to-end engineering capabilities.

In addition, Ayar Labs has positioned itself as a cornerstone of hyperscale AI systems. As commercialization advances, optical interconnects will likely become the backbone of global AI computing, enabling larger, faster, and more efficient deployments.

Ultimately, Ayar Labs’ light-based AI chips are not only a technological breakthrough. They are also considered a strategic foundation for the future of AI infrastructure worldwide.
