Hyperscalers Including Microsoft and Amazon Build Private Energy Systems to Power AI Data Centers

Hyperscalers like Microsoft, Amazon, Google and other cloud service providers are building private energy systems to power their AI data centers because the increasing electricity demand is greater than what public grids can handle.

Consequently, this marks a major shift in how the world’s biggest tech companies use energy by shifting from passive users to investing billions in building infrastructure for power generation.

The Grid Can’t Keep Up With AI’s Hunger

Global data center electricity demand is forecast to reach 1,000 terawatt-hours by 2026, more than double 2022 levels, according to the IEA. On top of that, U.S. data centers could consume between 7 and 12 percent of national power by 2030.

With 70% of the U.S. grid built between the 1950s and 1970s, aging infrastructure is struggling to keep pace. As a result, Microsoft and Amazon are bypassing it by building their own power plants and transmission lines to guarantee supply.

Off the Grid: What Private Energy Infrastructure Really Looks Like

Rather than wait years for utility plug-ins, hyperscalers are building wind and solar farms, reviving dead nuclear plants and investing in small modular reactors that can power a campus 0ff-grid.

Meanwhile, President Trump formalized the shift with a Ratepayer Protection Pledge directing tech companies to build, buy, or bring their own power to new AI data centers with a signing ceremony set for March 4, 2026.

How Microsoft and Amazon are building Private Energy Systems for AI Data Centers

Microsoft committed to a 20-year, $16 billion agreement to restart Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania to power its data centers, expecting 835 megawatts when it comes online in 2028 which is enough to power 800,000 U.S. homes. Beyond that, Microsoft also partnered with MISO and PJM in January 2026 to modernize grid planning.

Similarly, Amazon invested over $20 billion in converting the Susquehanna nuclear site into a nuclear-powered campus, targeting more than 5 gigawatts of new nuclear energy by 2039. Across the industry, big tech signed contracts for more than 10 gigawatts of nuclear capacity last year.

When Tech Giants Unplug: What This Means for Everyone Else

However, the shift carries real consequences. Bills in some regions have risen nearly 30%, driven by utilities upgrading infrastructure for data center demand. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called on hyperscalers to pay for their own power so costs don’t fall on local businesses and homeowners.

Furthermore, analysts project utilities will spend between $1.1 and $1.4 trillion by 2030, more than double the previous decade. In response, the Department of Energy is pushing regulators to take a more active role in how loads connect to the grid.

Why Every Hyperscaler is Betting on Nuclear

At the center of every hyperscaler energy strategy sits nuclear because it delivers always-on, carbon-free power in a smaller footprint than wind or solar. Google signed a deal with Kairos Power for up to 500 megawatts of SMR capacity, the first reactor targeted for 2030.

In addition, Meta entered a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy for the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois. In Texas, Fermi America secured a permit for an 11 gigawatt private power grid campus. A Deloitte analysis predicts nuclear power could meet up to 10 percent of data center demand by 2035.

Ultimately, the hyperscalers aren’t just building AI, they’re building the energy systems to run it and becoming a new class of utility accountable not to ratepayers, but to compute demand and shareholder returns. The consequences for public grids, energy equity and control of critical infrastructure are only beginning to come into focus.
