China Just Listed Its Most Valuable Publicly Traded Company and Most of the World Has Never Heard of It. CXMT Makes the Memory Chips That Could End China’s Dependence on Samsung and SK Hynix

CXMT has become China’s most valuable listed company, yet few people know the company. However, its Shanghai debut changed that almost overnight. Shares rose, lifting its market value to about $539 billion.

Meanwhile, the IPO raised $8.6 billion. This debut has placed China’s leading memory-chip maker at the center of global attention. Its rise also highlights Beijing’s push for greater semiconductor self-reliance. More importantly, CXMT now faces the global memory industry’s biggest players.

CXMT’s Rise Is Reshaping China’s Memory Chip Industry

CXMT makes DRAM for computers, smartphones, servers, and other products. The company held about 7.7% of global DRAM sales in 2025. That share made CXMT the world’s fourth-largest DRAM maker.

Meanwhile, AI demand has strengthened the global memory market. AI infrastructure requires large amounts of memory, increasing demand, and prices. Because of this, CXMT has gained greater commercial importance. Its growth also gives Chinese manufacturers a larger domestic DRAM source.

Beijing’s Push for Chip Independence Is Paying Off

Until now, China spent years strengthening its domestic semiconductor industry. At the same time, U.S. export controls have restricted Chinese access to some advanced technologies. CXMT supports Beijing’s wider effort to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

Moreover, state-linked investors owned 36.29% of CXMT before its IPO. The national semiconductor investment fund and local governments also supported its development. Consequently, CXMT represents a major part of China’s state-backed semiconductor strategy.

However, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron still lead the global memory industry. CXMT also trails them in advanced memory and high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators.

The Global Memory Race Is Entering a New Phase

Looking ahead, CXMT plans to expand production and strengthen research with IPO proceeds. According to reports, the company is also planning for another memory-chip plant in Beijing.

Moreover, established rivals continue investing heavily. SK Hynix approved $38.3 billion for facilities through 2031 and the  investment includes advanced DRAM production.

Ultimately, CXMT must increase output while improving advanced memory technology. Its expansion will show whether China can challenge established memory leaders. The outcome could also reshape global sourcing choices as memory demand continues rising.
