Amazon vs Nvidia: Custom Silicon and Chip Control Battle

Amazon and Nvidia are in a power struggle over control of the chips that power Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence. Nvidia dominates AI workloads through its GPUs and tightly integrated software stack. Meanwhile, Amazon wants to reduce this dominance by designing its own custom chips for AWS.

This clash goes beyond performance and it will definitely shape the future of AI infrastructure.

    Nvidia Grip on AI Compute

Nvidia holds over 80-90% of market shares for AI accelerator chips. Its GPUs are used to power the majority of the large AI models used for training and inferences across the cloud. According to Reuters, this dominance helped Nvidia reach new heights as the demand for AI chips increased.

More importantly, Nvidia expands this reach through its CUDA software ecosystem, making Nvidia the hardware default for machine learning. One of the major benefits of this CUDA software ecosystem is that it continuously improves your old Nvidia hardware over time with new software updates.

    Amazon Push Into Custom Silicon

In response to Nvidia’s dominance, Amazon started developing its own AI chips to reduce the dependence on Nvidia’s chips. AWS launched Inferentia chips for inference workloads and Trianium chips for AI training. These chips targeted better price performance at scale, especially for large cloud customers.

At the same time, Amazon continues to improve its chip designs. Newer Trainium generations focus on efficiency and power consumption as AI workloads strain data centers. Currently, Amazon views custom silicon as essential towards managing long-term cloud costs.

    Competing While Still Partnering

Even with this development, Amazon has not completely abandoned Nvidia. Instead, AWS runs a dual strategy. It continues to sell Nvidia powered chips while promoting its own chips. Amazon has also adopted Nvidia’s NVLink interconnect technology to train future Trainium systems.

This approach enables Amazon to meet demands while also aiming to secure a future with more internal control over AI hardware.

    Performance and Ecosystem Reliability

At the moment, Nvidia still holds the major market shares even with all of Amazon’s efforts. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang captured Nvidia’s confidence in a sentence that sounds like a compliment but is actually a warning. Responding to TPU competition and the broader custom chip trend, Huang said “Nvidia is the only platform that runs every AI model”

This statement carries weight because Nvidia’s GPUs are used to run a wide range of AI and adjacent compute tasks while the Amazon Chips are only excellent at specific workloads. For organisations that don’t run just one specific workload, the choice is obvious. Some customers only use AWS for cost effectiveness rather than the peak performance Nvidia chips deliver.

The Wider AI Chips Arms Race

The AI chips arms race goes beyond Amazon and Nvidia. Tech giants like Meta, Microsoft and Google are also building custom chips to reduce their reliance on Nvidia. Reuters describes this development as a broader infrastructure arms race reshaping the AI industry.

As a result, AI looks less like a software business and more like a capital intensive infrastructure plan.

What This Battle Means for AI’s Future

It is quite obvious that this battle will not produce a clear winner. Nvidia will maintain its edge in high-end performance and software dominance. However, Amazon will gain leverage by controlling more of its AI stack, from chips to cloud services.

In the long run, this move threatens Nvidia’s pricing advantage and gives hyperscalers like Microsoft and Meta greater control over AI economics, reinforcing the idea that whoever controls the chips controls AI’s future.
