Google faced major challenges in the global tech market in October 2026. Rising chip costs forced many phone makers to change their retail prices quickly.
These high component costs made brands increase phone prices overnight without adding new features. As a result, buyers faced unexpected price jumps on regular middle-tier mobile phones.
Google Pixel 10a Price Jump
In October 2026, Google raised the starting price of its Pixel 10a phone by $100 and major online stores like Amazon updated their price tags immediately. The basic 128GB model moved from $499 up to $599. At the same time, the 256GB model went from $599 up to $699.
In addition, this mid-cycle price change happened seven months after the phone first launched in March. Usually, phone companies reduce prices on older phones over time. However, Google broke this trend by raising prices on an old phone using the same Tensor G4 chip.
Rising Memory Costs and Supply Chain Strain
Moreover, rising hardware costs caused these decisions across tech factories worldwide. Specifically, a big shortage of memory chips made cheap phones less profitable for companies. Prices for memory chips jumped sharply over recent months due to limited silicon supplies.
Google Vice President Shakil Barkat talked about this memory problem during company updates. He explained that RAM prices climbed from $2.80 per gigabyte up to $12 per gigabyte. Because of this jump, memory chips now take up almost half the total cost of budget Android phones and chip suppliers passed these high costs directly to phone makers.
Budget Phone Shift and What Lies Ahead
Because phone makers could not cover these high chip costs, phone buyers pay the extra money. Other top brands like Apple and Samsung also raised prices on older phone models that same month. Because of this trend, cheap high-quality smartphones are quickly disappearing from shops.
In addition, Google changed buyer expectations for budget phones through this recent price increase. Also, software engineers started building future Android updates to work well with smaller RAM sizes.
Looking ahead, these supply problems will keep affecting phone choices throughout the coming year. For now, buyers should prepare for higher starting prices on future phone releases, including the upcoming Pixel 11a.
