NVIDIA Shocks the World: Becomes First Company Ever to Top Apple and Microsoft

NVIDIA, a leading force in the AI chip landscape, has set a new record in the tech world. On Thursday, July 3, Nvidia became the most valuable company in the world with a market capitalization of $3.92 trillion, surpassing Apple’s record closing value of $3.915 trillion for December 26, 2025.

While NVIDIA had previously topped both Apple and Microsoft, briefly, in market capitalization, this is the first time where the difference between the three companies has been consistent and sustained.

On June 18, 2024, NVIDIA surpassed Microsoft and Apple with a market cap of $3.3 trillion, lasting one day. In a similar occurrence, on November 6, 2024, NVIDIA’s market cap rose to $3.43 trillion, leaving Apple at $3.389 trillion and Microsoft at $3.102 trillion. There were also brief instances where NVIDIA held the position of most valuable company on January 24 and June 3, 2025.

NVIDIA’s market capitalization closed at $3.89 trillion on Thursday, and the figure has been constant since then. Microsoft is currently at second place with a market cap of $3.71 trillion, leaving Apple at third place with a market cap of $3.19 trillion.

A Meteoric Rise Fueled by AI

NVIDIA’s ascent to the world’s most valuable company is no fluke, and the fact that it’s still maintaining that position till now (compared to other times) is due to the significance it currently holds in the AI industry.

NVIDIA is currently an undisputed leader in AI computing thanks to its high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) and its visionary bet on artificial intelligence before the current boom.

Before its systemic bet on artificial intelligence, NVIDIA was famous for its GPUs, which were employed in gaming (with its GeForce series GPUs being the industry standard) and professional visualization (Quadro series GPUs) used in fields like architecture and engineering.

In 2006, NVIDIA took a pivotal step in making AI chips with the release of its Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), which allowed developers to program NVIDIA’s GPUs for general-purpose computing tasks beyond graphics rendering.

In the 2010s, NVIDIA made an even more conscious decision to focus heavily on AI, investing billions in research and development even when AI was still in its early stages. This foresight is what gives them the edge they currently possess in the AI industry a decade later.

NVIDIA’s GPUs are no longer restricted to gaming and stunning engines; they are now the computational engines, like its high-end H100 and Blackwell series, driving the most advanced AI models, from large language models (OpenAI, Gemini, Llama) to generative AI models (DALL-E, Stable Diffusion), computer vision models, speech recognition and synthesis models, robotics and autonomous systems, and financial modeling and fraud detection, amongst others.

Essentially, any cutting-edge AI application that involves deep learning, neural networks, or large-scale data processing is very likely to be developed or trained using NVIDIA AI GPUs due to their unrivaled performance in parallel computation.

What This Means for the Future

NVIDIA ascending the rank of the most valuable company in the world underscores the undeniable reality that AI is not just a trend but the defining technological revolution of our time.

During NVIDIA’s Q4 fiscal 2025 earning reports, CEO Jensen Huang said, “Artificial intelligence has been developing at an incredible pace, as agentic AI and physical AI are creating the basis for the next AI wave, which will revolutionize the largest industries.”

The rise for NVIDIA does not signify the end for Microsoft and Apple, as both remain equally powerful and profitable companies with diverse revenue streams. However, it does serve as a reminder that in the fast-paced world of technology, market leadership is earned through foresight, innovation, and dedication to the next big wave.

Tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Google are already locked in the intense race to build the most sophisticated AI center, putting NVIDIA’s chips in intensely high demand, which has contributed and will further contribute to NVIDIA’s growth.
