Meta Superintelligence Lab considers abandoning open-source model

Meta, known for its Llama family of open-source large language models (LLMs), has been a driving force behind open AI research. However, the company’s newly proposed Superintelligence Labs (MSL), if fully adopted, will signal a notable shift in the AI research landscape which might also alter the trajectory of open-source AI development worldwide.

Llama’s public release catalyzed developer communities, enabled transparency, and set high standards for accessible, state-of-the-art AI models. But with the creation of the Superintelligence Labs comes the opposite, which will allow for Meta to have tighter controls over its intellectual property and also allow it to compete with other company’s models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and High-flyer’s DeepSeek.

One of the reasons behind the creation of Meta’s Superintelligence Labs is the underwhelming performance of Meta’s flagship “Behemoth” model. Described as a 2-trillion-parameter teacher for future Llama versions, it failed to outperform existing Llama 4 models in decisive ways. Its launch date slated for April 2025, and meant to coincide with LlamaCon, Meta’s inaugural conference for GenAI developers, was pushed back to “fall 2025 or later.”

Led by Alexandr Wang of Scale AI who will be the new Chief AI Officer and Lead at MSL, the formation of the Superintelligence Labs also brought about a philosophical debate between the visions of Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta.

For LeCun, he argues that Meta achieving a “cat-level intelligence” through the formation of MSL, remains unattainable by mere looking at the company’s capacities. Instead, he encourages refining the company’s open-source models.

LeCun has always maintained his argument for open-source AI models, arguing that they offer broad access to state-of-the-art models that accelerate research, ensure greater cultural diversity in AI development, and make powerful systems safer through independent scrutiny.

“AI platforms must be open, just like the software infrastructure of the internet became open,” LeCun said last year while commending Zuckerberg’s commitment to developing open source models.

However, for Zuckerberg, he said in a memo released this year that the development of superintelligence is “coming into sight,” as it is the “beginning of a new era for humanity.”

“I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way,” Zuckerberg said in the memo released by CNBC.

This change of opinions from Zuckerberg may have been caused by how DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company that built its models on Llama’s open-source foundational technology, immediately took the world by storm. It is with this realization and the vision to compete with other leading AI companies that Zuckerberg committed $14.3 billion for the development of MSL.

This move also comes after the “Zuck Bucks” campaign, where Zuckerberg went on a poaching spree on the talent team of other competing tech giants; OpenAI, Google. It is reported that these talents will be in charge of building and developing MSL, where they’ll be working on foundation models and products as well as Meta’s Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) projects.
