
Intel is raising its 2026 capital spending forecast as AI demand strengthens its server business. The increase gives Intel more capacity to serve data-center customers as AI infrastructure expands.
More importantly, the decision shows how AI demand is reshaping Intel’s priorities. After missing much of the early AI accelerator boom, Intel now sees stronger opportunities in server CPUs and manufacturing. The company must now turn stronger demand into durable growth.
Intel Raises 2026 Capital Spending to $20 Billion
Recently, Intel raised its 2026 capital spending forecast from $18 billion to $20 billion. According to reports, the increase reflects growing adoption of Intel data-center CPUs for AI infrastructure.
Moreover, Intel plans higher capital spending in 2027. The company already has customer engagements for its upcoming 14A process and expects high-volume production in 2028.
AI Server Demand Is Driving New Investment
AI workloads need more than accelerators. Data centers also rely on CPUs for orchestration, data processing, inference, and general-purpose computing. Intel says its Xeon processors continue serving those roles across AI infrastructure.
Furthermore, the demand is already showing up in Intel’s results. Its Data Center and AI business generated $6.3 billion in second-quarter revenue. Revenue increased 59% from the same quarter a year earlier. All of this growth can be attributed to rising AI demand that pushed Intel’s CPU orders beyond production levels earlier in the year.
Because of this, Intel has a clear reason to expand capacity. However, higher investment does not guarantee stronger market share. Intel still needs competitive products and effective execution while managing expansion costs.
Intel Is Trying to Reclaim Its Place in the AI Race
Intel’s position in AI carries added importance because Nvidia currently leads the accelerator market. However, Intel is taking a broader route by emphasizing CPUs and supporting infrastructure. Its strategy includes Xeon processors, networking, custom silicon, advanced packaging, and foundry services.
In addition, the company is also deepening relationships with major technology providers. In April, Intel and Google announced a multiyear collaboration involving Xeon processors and custom infrastructure processing units. Google said Xeon would continue supporting AI, inference, and general workloads across its cloud infrastructure.
The Spending Sets Up Next Phase
Intel’s higher spending creates both an opportunity and a responsibility. The company must expand production while maintaining financial discipline. Recent investments show how AI demand is influencing its manufacturing plans.
In July, Intel announced a €5 billion investment at its Ireland campus. The project will expand production capacity for current and next-generation Xeon processors. Intel specifically linked the investment to global demand for AI and high-performance computing.
Meanwhile, competition remains intense. AMD continues competing with Intel in server CPUs, while Nvidia remains the leading force in AI accelerators. Intel therefore cannot rely on rising demand alone.
Intel Now Has to Turn AI Demand Into Lasting Growth
The next stage will depend on execution. Intel increased spending because customer demand has improved, but capacity alone cannot secure lasting growth. The company must convert stronger orders into revenue while keeping manufacturing investments productive.
At the same time, Intel must maintain progress across its product and foundry businesses. The 2026 spending increase signals confidence in future demand, but financial results will ultimately determine its success.
For Intel, the opportunity is clear. AI infrastructure is creating stronger demand for server computing and Intel is investing to be a part of it.
