Anthropic has Launched Opus 5 at Half the Price of Fable 5. It Is the Fourth Claude Model in Under Two Months and the Pricing Strategy Is the Real Story.

Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5, a new AI model that delivers performance close to its flagship Claude Fable 5 while costing half as much to use.

This launch is the company’s fourth Claude model release in less than two months and shows that Anthropic is now competing as much on price and efficiency as it is on raw performance.

According to the AI safety company, Opus 5 is designed for everyday work such as software development, office tasks, research, and knowledge work. It keeps the same API pricing as the earlier Opus 4.8 model at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Fable 5, by comparison, costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.

A Different Approach to AI Competition

The release comes just weeks after Anthropic introduced Fable 5, its most capable public AI model. Instead of replacing it, Opus 5 gives developers and businesses another option that balances capability with lower operating costs.

According to Anthropic, customers can also adjust how much computing effort the model uses for different tasks. Simpler requests can run faster and more cheaply, while more demanding work can use additional reasoning when needed.

Anthropic’s release of this model is a sign that many AI companies are now trying to make advanced AI affordable enough for businesses to use every day without dramatically increasing costs.

    Why the Pricing Matters

The pricing may be the biggest takeaway from this launch.

Large language models (LLMs) can become expensive as companies process millions or even billions of tokens every day. By offering a model that approaches Fable 5’s capabilities at half the API price, Anthropic is giving developers a way to reduce operating costs without moving to a much less capable model.

Anthropic product lead Dianne Penn said users should choose Opus 5 when they want the best balance between performance and value. However, Fable 5 remains the recommended choice for long running autonomous projects that require the company’s highest level of capability.

Four Launches in Less Than Two Months

Opus 5 also highlights how quickly Anthropic is updating its Claude family.

The company has now released four Claude 5 series models in under two months. That pace is much faster than the longer release cycles that once defined frontier AI development. Instead, companies are now increasingly shipping frequent improvements that target different customer needs instead of waiting for one major annual release.

For developers and enterprise customers, this means more choices, but it also means deciding between models based on performance, safety, speed, and cost rather than simply choosing the newest release.
