Meta just left the RE100 clean energy initiative, signaling a major change in how it plans to power its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. This decision reflects the growing pressure AI places on electricity supplies and shows renewable energy alone cannot currently support every large-scale data center.

As a result, Meta has adopted a broader energy strategy that combines renewable power with reliable generation sources while continuing its AI expansion.

Meta Shifts Away From Its RE100 Commitment

Recently, Meta ended its membership in RE100 after years of supporting the global renewable electricity initiative. The company made the move as it rapidly expands AI data centers that require constant electricity.

At the same time, Meta continues investing in renewable energy projects across its operations. However, company leaders now recognize renewable generation alone cannot satisfy the immediate power requirement created by advanced AI infrastructure.

This change comes alongside Meta’s growing investment in large data center campuses. For example, the company recently announced a multibillion-dollar AI data center in Alberta, Canada. The project will rely partly on new natural gas generation to ensure dependable electricity.

AI’s Exploding Power Demand Is Driving the Change

At the moment, Meta’s AI ambitions continue driving electricity demand to unprecedented levels. Every new data center requires massive computing clusters that operate around the clock. Therefore, reliable electricity has become just as important as computing hardware.

Meanwhile, renewable energy projects often take years to secure permits, complete construction, and connect to electricity grids. In addition, many regions face grid congestion that delays new renewable capacity. Because of this, renewable power cannot always keep pace with the speed of AI development.

Natural gas offers dependable electricity regardless of weather conditions. As a result, Meta believes it must combine renewable investments with dispatchable generation while electricity infrastructure continues expanding. The company has also indicated future nuclear energy could help meet growing AI power needs over the longer term.

A Turning Point for Big Tech’s Climate Strategy

Meta’s departure from RE100 marks one of the strongest acknowledgments that AI growth is reshaping corporate energy strategies. The decision highlights the widening gap between ambitious climate commitments and the practical demands of operating large AI facilities.

Furthermore, other major technology companies face similar challenges as they expand AI infrastructure. Investors, policymakers, and environmental organizations will likely watch future energy decisions closely. The move could also influence how companies report progress toward sustainability goals while balancing rising electricity demand.

Moreover, the decision suggests many technology companies may rely on multiple energy sources until renewable capacity and electricity grids expand enough to support continuous AI operations.

Meta’s New Energy Approach Could Shape the Industry

Meta’s future energy strategy will likely combine renewable electricity with other reliable power options. The company continues investing in clean energy while seeking solutions that can support its expanding AI operations

Meanwhile, the wider technology sector may follow similar approaches as companies develop larger AI systems. Renewable energy will remain important, but additional sources could play a role until power networks expand.

Ultimately, Meta’s decision reveals a new reality for the AI industry. Building advanced artificial intelligence requires not only computing power but also a stable and scalable energy supply.
