Why Nvidia’s $3.5B MediaTek Deal Secures Its AI Dominance

Nvidia has invested $3.5 billion in MediaTek but the deal goes beyond money. It places the company closer to a crucial change in AI computing.

Today, large cloud companies want a bigger say in the chips they use. Therefore, Nvidia wants to remain useful even when customers choose custom designs.

    Nvidia’s $3.5B Bet on MediaTek

On the 31st of August, the two companies announced an expanded partnership. The deal channels $3.5 billion into MediaTek convertible bonds. MediaTek raised $3.9 billion through the full overseas bond offering.

MediaTek will adopt Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion platform for custom AI systems. The partners will also continue work on personal computing products and AI-powered vehicles.

Convertible bonds combine features of debt and shares. The bonds give the investor a financial interest in MediaTek and an option to convert later. However, the companies’ product plans carry greater strategic weight.

MediaTek brings experience in chip design, connectivity, and power efficiency. Meanwhile, its partner brings AI computing, graphics, software, and system designs. Together, they want to offer customers a clearer path from a custom chip to a complete AI setup.

MediaTek remains independent under the agreement. Instead, the partnership encourages both companies to plan future products around compatible technology.

    Big Tech’s Custom-Chip Push

Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic now invest in custom AI chips. Each company wants hardware that better matches its own services and workloads.

Custom chips can lower costs or reduce power use for specific jobs. They can also reduce dependence on a single supplier. However, their growth creates a clear challenge for Nvidia’s main chip business.

The company has chosen cooperation over confrontation. MediaTek can help customers create specialized chips for particular AI tasks. Then, customers can connect those chips with Nvidia’s wider computing systems.

Consequently, Nvidia can keep a role when customers move beyond standard GPUs. The company does not need to supply every chip. It needs customers to keep using parts of its broader setup. That approach gives cloud companies more choice. At the same time, the strategy lets it support customer plans rather than lose them.

    NVLink’s Strategic Advantage

NVLink Fusion helps large groups of AI chips share information quickly. In simple terms, it acts like a high-speed link between chips and the larger computer system.

Rather than asking customers to build every connection themselves, Nvidia gives them a tested starting point. The platform also includes chip connections, switches, computer designs, and supporting software.

An individual AI chip can change from one customer to another. Yet, the technology that joins many chips together can remain consistent. In addition, financial results show why the company values that role. Nvidia generated $215.9 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue. Its data-center revenue rose 68% from the previous year.

Furthermore, data-center networking revenue grew 142%. The company linked that growth to demand for its NVLink computing fabric.

    The Next AI Infrastructure Battle

Next, MediaTek must show that its products meet customer needs. Cloud companies must decide whether the partnership offers enough speed, flexibility, and efficiency. Nvidia must also turn the agreement into working customer projects. Meanwhile, rivals will promote competing chips and alternative connection methods.

The deal cannot guarantee future dominance. Customers may build more technology internally, and competing platforms may gain support. Still, it now has a practical response to the custom-chip trend. Ultimately, success will depend on whether customers adopt the combined technology at scale.
