Meta has officially turned on the switch at its data center in Kansas City, Missouri. On August 20, Meta officially opened the $1B data center project that has been in the works since 2022.

The $1B AI center is more than a tech investment; it’s Meta’s next move to lead next-generation computing while also putting Kansas on the map as a growing tech hub.

A $1B Investment That Redefines Tech Infrastructure

Located in the Golden Plains Technology Park in Kansas City is the $1B hyperscale data center. It is designed to provide computing power and infrastructure needed for all Meta’s platforms.

At the peak of the construction, this project created an average of 1,500 skilled trade jobs . And when fully operational will support more than 100 permanent jobs.

The Kansas AI center actively achieves LEED Gold Certification, adhering to high energy efficiency standards, water conservation, and recycling. And like Meta’s fleet of data centers, the Kansas Center matches its electricity use with 100% clean and renewable energy.

The center’s builders actively designed it with a modular structure, enabling gradual expansion as needed.

    Why Kansas City?

Kansas City is like a golden goose for tech hubs. Known for being one of the first cities with Google Fiber, it boasts of a vast network of fiber optic cables.

Google Fiber isn’t just a high-speed internet provider. It also a catalyst for economic development, technological advancement, and competition within a city. Cities with Google Fiber are hotspots for startups and data centers.

Kansas’ location at the heart of the US is also an added advantage. The positioning allows a data center to serve users both on the East and West Coasts. Also, Missouri offers tax exemptions on utilities, machinery, and construction material, which makes it a business-friendly environment.

“In 2022, we selected Kansas City because it offers excellent infrastructure, a robust electrical grid, a strong pool of talent for construction and operation jobs, and incredible community partners,” said Brad Davis, Data Center Community and Economic Development Director at Meta.

An Economic Home Run for Missouri

Beyond the $1B hyperscale data center in Missouri, Meta has poured more than $1 million into other projects. This includes across schools and non-profits spanning Clay County, Platte County, and Kansas City.

Meta is also giving back to the community by supporting small businesses through its Community Accelerator events to impact digital skills on how to leverage AI tools in growing their businesses.

Through its Data Center Community Action Grants, Meta has supported tech projects that are community-friendly and focused on improving STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education.

“Meta’s grand opening in Kansas City is a powerful testament to Missouri’s ability to attract and support the most innovative companies in the world,” said Sabash Alias, CEO of Missouri Partnership.

Sabah further stated Meta’s investment “brings transformative technology, high-quality jobs, and lasting economic impact to our state, and we are proud that Meta chose Missouri as a key part of its future.”

Mayor Quinton Lucas echoed the sentiment, stating, “Meta’s investment in Kansas City is a clear signal that our city is a place where innovation, talent, and community come together.”

“We look forward to working with Meta to ensure this development integrates well with our community priorities and delivers meaningful benefits for Kansas City residents,” he further said.

What This Means for the Future of Meta

For Meta, this data center ramps up Meta’s infrastructure to handle the exploding demand of AI. The Kansas City AI center positions Meta as a serious AI contender, fueling innovations that could redefine social media and beyond.

The future of next-generation AI computing is here, and Meta is taking the lead on this.
