Amazon has crossed a valuation milestone that only four companies had reached before it.

On August 3, Amazon shares jumped 4.6% to a record $284.02, pushing the company’s market value above $3 trillion for the first time and making it the fifth company to reach that level after Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Alphabet.

This came days after Amazon reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter results, but one part of the business stood out to investors. Amazon Web Services (AWS) grew 37% year-over-year, its fastest growth in 18 quarters. The result showed that demand for cloud infrastructure remains strong as companies spend heavily on artificial intelligence.

AWS Has Become the Clearest AI Signal

Amazon’s retail business remains the big part, but the latest market reaction was closely tied to what is happening inside AWS.

AWS alone generated $42.2 billion in revenue during the second quarter, up 36.7% from a year earlier, with the growth significantly faster than the previous quarter and exceeding analysts’ expectations.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also said the company’s AI and chip businesses had each reached annual revenue run rates above $25 billion. And this matters because the retail giant has spent aggressively to build the infrastructure needed to handle the growing demand for AI workloads.

The company raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast from $200 billion to $220 billion, with much of the spending directed toward AWS infrastructure and AI capacity.

For investors, the latest AWS numbers provided something that AI spending alone could not, showing that customers are already paying for the computing capacity Amazon is building.

The Market Is Paying for AI Infrastructure

Amazon’s rise also reflects a broader shift in how investors value the company’s AI strategy.

Amazon has developed its own AI chips through its Trainium and Inferentia programs, expanded Bedrock for enterprise AI workloads, and continued investing in data centers and cloud capacity.

The company has also built a major relationship with Anthropic, whose Claude models run on AWS infrastructure.

This gives Amazon several ways to benefit as AI adoption expands, as it can earn from the infrastructure companies use to train and run models, the chips powering that infrastructure, and the software services built around those workloads.

The $3 Trillion Milestone Comes With a Cost

Still, the market’s enthusiasm does not remove the risks surrounding Amazon’s strategy.

Amazon’s trailing 12-month free cash flow was negative $7.6 billion, while its 2026 capital spending forecast has risen to $220 billion. This means investors are being asked to accept substantial spending today in expectation of stronger returns from AI and cloud infrastructure over time.

For now, the numbers are giving Wall Street more confidence that the spending is producing demand.

Amazon’s journey into the $3 trillion club, therefore, says more about how valuable the infrastructure behind the AI boom has become. The company still has to prove that its enormous investment can translate into durable cash generation, but its latest results have given investors a reason to believe the AI opportunity is already showing up in its business.
