OpenAI makes leading artificial intelligence software, but computer chip limits slow down future progress. To fix this shortage, OpenAI and Synopsys started a major multi-year partnership on September 30, 2026. Together, both tech giants plan to change how chips get built using smart software tools.
OpenAI and Synopsys Build GPT-Synopsys Model to Automate Chip Design
Under the deal, engineers from both companies will train a new AI model called GPT-Synopsys. OpenAI is paying to use chip-building software directly from Synopsys. In turn, the model will run on OpenAI servers to handle heavy design work.
The system works inside the Synopsys Autopilot platform like an extra engineer on the team. Instead of just writing code, the model runs software tools, checks the technical results, and fixes chip layouts automatically. Crucially, customer design data stays locked and is never used to train the model.
Moving From Code Suggestions to Direct Tool Control
Until now, AI tools only suggested code bits or short scripts for human workers. As a result, engineers still spent months fixing layouts and testing timings by hand. OpenAI and Synopsys built this new model because chip design needs tools that run software directly.
Because of this change, GPT-Synopsys works inside chip software to solve tricky layout problems. The system checks real engineering results and speeds up testing. Highlighting this shift, OpenAI President Greg Brockman noted that the partnership helps teams test designs faster, letting companies deliver working chips in much less time.
Faster Silicon Development and New Business Models
This partnership changes how fast companies build microchips and how much money they spend. By taking over repetitive tasks, the system cuts design times from years to months. As a result, chipmakers can deal with engineering shortages while lowering big research costs.
Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi noted that smart software helps engineers build much better chips. Beyond the technology, both companies created a shared-profit payment model based on real design results. Because of this setup, software makers earn money alongside chip makers.
Looking ahead, this partnership creates a strong cycle for the tech industry. Faster chips run smarter AI software, which then helps design even better hardware. Over time, this setup will permanently change how companies build computer chips.
