Lenovo, a Chinese multinational company, unveiled its new product concept, a solar-powered Yoga PC, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 held in Barcelona. During the program that ran from March 3rd to 6th, 2025, the company introduced the world’s first “ultraslim” PC that looks like a regular laptop and functions like a regular laptop but with extra features running on energy from the sun.

The Yoga solar PC swaps out the laptop’s usual panel with 84 solar cells using back-contact (BC) cell technology, which allows placing electrical contacts/metal grid lines on the back of the cell to allow the front areas to absorb more sunlight. This technology improves the absorption and conversion efficiency of the solar cells on the PC.

Alongside the BC cell technology is the Dynamic Solar Tracking System (STS), which uses sensors like Light Dependent Resistor sensors (LDRs) or photodiodes to detect the sun’s position and actuators/motors to dynamically adjust the solar panels (cells in this case) to move accordingly. The tracking system also constantly measures the solar panel’s current and voltage.

The STS works with the Solar-first Energy system to automatically adjust the laptop’s charger setting to prioritize sending the harvested sun energy to the system and help to ensure the laptop maximizes the use of the solar energy and system stability to enhance the laptop’s overall reliability regardless of light intensity.

The ability of the Yoga PC to generate energy in low lighting conditions allows the laptop to sustain battery charge while idle. The solar panel features on the device allow for over a 24 percent conversion rate, which is speculated to be one of the highest conversion rates in the industry, as the average rate stands at 21 percent.

The solar-powered Yoga PC can absorb and convert enough direct sunlight in 20 minutes, which allows the device a one-hour duration of video playback. The laptop is 15mm thin and weighs 1.22kg in design; more features are yet to be released concerning this product. However, the potential benefits are groundbreaking.

The solar concept in the Yoga PC would aid uninterrupted productivity and enhanced mobility as it curbs the limitations that arise from being stuck in a place without a charger or power supply. This makes it ideal for people who work in remote places, field workers, and travelers. It gives the freedom to work from anywhere without power constraints.

The device also gives off a low carbon footprint, making it eco-friendly due to its solar-powered nature. During the MWC 2025, Lenovo also showcased a detachable solar power kit for existing Yoga laptops and other devices. This standalone solution comes in the form of a foldable, USB-C solar panel kit that can be attached to a bag, tent, tree, or backpack or stand on its own fold-out kickstand to allow users to charge on the go.

Lenovo’s solar-powered laptop concept is one that bridges the gap between functionality and environmental awareness. This invention represents Lenovo’s vision of intertwining renewable energy and innovation for a sustainable future. Lenovo has certainly sparked a conversation about the future of mobile devices and how they will be adopted globally.
