Sakana AI, an emerging Tokyo-based startup, recently raised $135 million in its Series B funding round, pushing its post-money valuation to $2.65 billion.
This funding comes at a time where the company is fully focused on developing AI models that are finely tuned to Japanese language and culture, an approach that addresses a distinct regional demand as global tech giants dominate the broad, large-scale AI model race.
Founded in 2023 by former Google researchers Llion Jones, Ren Ito, and David Ha, Sakana AI was built on a reputation of pioneering what is known as Sovereign AI. This means building localized AI systems that will reflect Japan’s unique linguistic and cultural nuances, as well as tailored to serve local enterprises more effectively than generalized and popular global models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Since 2023, David Ha, Sakana AI’s CEO, and also a former Stability AI researcher, has been leading a team that is determined on a certain type of AI development that is solely focused on post-training optimization rather than competing in the resource-heavy foundation model arms race that leading AI giants like OpenAI and Google often engage in.
The $135 million funding round saw participation from existing and new investors, including Japan’s largest bank Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) and other prominent global capital firms like Khosla Ventures, Lux Capital, and New Enterprise Associates among others.
MUFG’s involvement is particularly significant, especially as the Group’s President and CEO Hironori Kamezawa expresses a commitment to partner with Sakana AI on a wide AI adoption across Japanese industries.
“MUFG has recognized Sakana AI’s world-class technological capabilities from the very beginning, and has deepened our collaboration as a partner in AI implementation,” Kamezawa said in a statement. “Through this investment, I hope the benefits of AI will extend beyond transforming banking operations to Japan’s diverse industries.”
This blend of local financial heavyweights and international tech investors highlights the growing recognition of the value in localized AI solutions.
The new capital will be directed toward several strategic initiatives, as Sakana AI plans to deepen its research into collective intelligence and self-evolving systems, as well as accelerate post-training optimization for sovereign AI. The Japanese company will also pursue strategic investments, partnerships, and potential acquisitions to build a long-term local AI ecosystem.
Enterprise Applications and Market Strategy
Sakana AI has built and will continue building a growing enterprise business in Japan, working with some of the country’s largest corporations to deploy domain-specific AI applications.
Notable collaborations include strategic partnerships with MUFG and Daiwa Securities Group for developing tailored AI tools in finance, where localized knowledge and cultural context are critical.
With this funding, the company will be expanding its applications beyond financial services into defense, intelligence, and manufacturing sectors, where local expertise can provide significant competitive advantages.
For Sakana AI, the company’s broader vision is to contribute to Japan’s sovereign AI capabilities by focusing on post-training optimization, alignment, domain adaptation, and localization for Japanese language, culture, and regulatory needs.
Rather than competing in the global race to train ever-large base models, Sakana AI argues that Japan can build robust AI systems with far lower resource requirements by instead being focused or concentrated on these layers.
More specifically, the company said in a press release that the funding will particularly go into accelerating research and development (R&D), societal implementation of Applied AI, and building a scalable ecosystem.
Sustainable AI for Japan’s Future
Sakana AI’s “Sovereign AI” approach is particularly relevant for Japan, a country facing a demographic decline and labor shortages. The Tokyo-based company is positioning its model of resource-aware, locally-applied AI as a pragmatic path to achieving productivity and resilience.
By focusing on efficiency and sustainability, the company aims to deliver AI solutions that are not only powerful but also accessible and environmentally responsible.
“We see a strong global demand for Sovereign AI, tailored to national cultures and values. We also believe that the focus for Japan’s model development should be in post-training, and we are focusing R&D on this layer,” the company wrote. “This allows us to sustainably develop and optimize frontier models for Japan’s specific needs, offering a distinct path and resource requirement from the large-scale model competition.”
As Sakana AI continues to grow, it is likely to play a key role in shaping Japan’s AI ecosystem. The company’s focus on efficiency, localization, and sustainability sets it apart from global AI giants and positions it as a leader in the development of sovereign AI capabilities, which also allows it to set a roadmap for other nations that are seeking to build Sovereign AI in a world that technology is alarmingly becoming complex and hard to navigate.
