Powering the Next Siri: Apple Will Use Google’s Gemini

In a bid to play catch-up in the AI race, Apple is set to take on one of the most ambitious and expensive upgrades to its digital assistant, Siri, by integrating Google’s advanced Gemini AI model and setting it up to power a major overhaul of the voice assistant, Bloomberg reports.

This surprising collaboration between the two tech giants specifically stands as a major investment for Apple, as the iPhone maker will be reportedly paying Google $1 billion annually for access to its Gemini technology.

As such, these Gemini-powered upgrades promise to significantly enhance Siri’s intelligence by leveraging Gemini’s large-scale 1.2 trillion-parameter capabilities. By leveraging this powerful technology, the enhanced Siri, which is expected to debut by Spring 2026 alongside iOS 26.4, will be a smarter, more capable assistant that can handle complex tasks with improved context and responsiveness.

More importantly, this deal represents a pivotal moment in Apple AI’s journey, as it addresses longstanding challenges with Siri’s performance and competitive positioning, especially in the AI era.

Apple’s decision to use Google’s Gemini comes after thorough evaluations of several AI providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, which falls under the Linwood and Glenwood projects Apple announced back in August.

The collaboration is also led internally by top executives like Mike Rockwell, Apple Vision Pro Chief, and Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, who are also in charge of the Linwood and Glenwood projects that are aimed at overhauling Siri to be more capable and competitive in the generative AI (GenAI) era.

This deal and the deployment of Google’s Gemini to power Apple’s Siri are a clear response from the iPhone maker to the increasing external pressures from its competitors, including Amazon who continues to enhance its voice assistant Alexa with AI updates.

However, by moving past the full focus on the in-house development of AI, Apple’s approach at combining the strength of two leading AI innovators, and housing Google’s AI upgrades within its secure environment, offers users the best of both worlds – cutting-edge AI performance and robust privacy protections.

Unlike traditional partnerships where a tech company practically outsources AI computations externally, Apple reportedly architected this integration to run exclusively on its own Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.

This way, the iPhone maker ensures data privacy by limiting Google’s access to user information, which actually addresses a core concern for Apple as it continues to maintain its privacy-first brand ethos.

What This Means for Users and the Industry

For everyday users of Siri, this significant upgrade promises to make voice interactions far more natural and productive, with better understanding of context, previous conversations, and even visual content on the screen.

The custom Gemini model will specifically elevate Siri’s ability to handle complex tasks such as multi-step planning, summarization, and delivering rich, multimedia answers, all of which are far beyond Siri’s current capability.

This means the voice assistant’s potential ability to excellently perform multi-step tasks across apps could redefine overall convenience on Apple devices.

For the industry, however, the collaboration between Apple and Google is a remarkable example of how competitive necessity is currently reshaping the strategies of tech giants, as they go from isolated development to collaborative innovation which further blurs the traditional lines between rivals.

It is also a sign of how AI’s rapid evolution will continue to transform user experiences, upgrade legacy platforms, and drive new standards for privacy and technical excellence.
