A company preparing to go public usually wants investors to see a steady hand at the wheel. So what should these investors make of two senior executives in a Big Tech leaving within the same week?

That is the question hanging over OpenAI after longtime executive and COO Brad Lightcap and Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser announced their departures just days apart. The timing of their departures are particularly notable because OpenAI is already reorganizing its leadership as it prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO).

Two Senior Departures in Three Days

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s longest-serving executives and its former chief operating officer, announced on August 11 that he was leaving to start something new. Two days later, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser said she was also leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and became COO in 2022. His role had already changed earlier this year when he moved from overseeing day-to-day operations to leading special projects, including complex deals and investments.

Dresser’s exit is more directly connected to OpenAI’s revenue operation. She joined the company in December 2025 after previously serving as CEO of Slack and was tasked with strengthening its enterprise business.

OpenAI described Dresser’s departure as a decision to pursue other opportunities, and subsequently announced that Dali Rajic, formerly president and COO of cybersecurity company Wiz, would replace her as chief revenue officer. Dresser will, however, remain during a transition period to work with the business team and support customers.

    The Timing Matters

The exits arrive as OpenAI moves closer to the public markets. The company confidentially filed for its IPO in June, while saying at the time that it had not decided when it would go public.

But that position has since become clearer. On August 19, CFO Sarah Friar reportedly told employees that OpenAI would be a public company in 2027, or sooner if its business continues to grow quickly. She also said the company had flexibility because of the $122 billion funding round it completed in March.

    What OpenAI Has Not Explained

The rapid changes have led to speculation about whether deeper disagreements over strategy or leadership are involved. Reports have also pointed to frequent reorganizations and growing concentration of operating responsibilities around co-founder Greg Brockman.

There is currently no public evidence establishing that Lightcap or Dresser left because of internal disagreements, as the company’s stated reasons point to a new venture and other opportunities respectively.

For now, what remains clear is the ChatGPT-maker’s pace of change ahead of a potential IPO.

While OpenAI is reshaping its senior leadership while preparing for a public-market future, two executives with important commercial responsibilities have left within days of each other. And even with the company’s explanations for both departures, the broader leadership changes still leave investors and employees with an obvious question about how OpenAI intends to structure its top team before it reaches the public markets.

The company’s next leadership moves may provide a clearer answer to this.
