Microsoft Launches Voice Assistant Hey Copilot For Windows 11

Microsoft is developing a new reality in Windows 11 with the recent introduction of “Hey Copilot,” a voice-activated AI assistant that brings hands-free AI interaction to every Windows PC. This launch, powered by artificial intelligence, aims to redefine how people work, create, and navigate their computers.

Now, Windows 11 users can now say “Hey Copilot” to wake their AI assistant without lifting a finger as long as it has been activated in the settings. The Copilot assistant listens through a visually indicated microphone interface, ready to assist with tasks ranging from searching files to troubleshooting software.

The tech is also privacy-focused as it only waits to listen to the word “Hey Copilot” to wake. Unlike some voice assistants that constantly record, Copilot uses a local audio buffer on the device, only listening for the wake word and overwriting audio frequently to avoid permanent storage.

With “Hey Copilot,” Microsoft has staked its claim in the rapidly evolving AI assistant space, competing against established voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and Google Assistant, as well as emerging AI chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.

    Seeing And Understanding Your Screen

Alongside the launch of this AI-powered voice assistant, Microsoft also launched Copilot Vision, an AI-powered screen-aware system that can “see” what’s on users’ screen to offer contextual help.

Whether users are navigating a new app, pulling data from documents, or in need of a step-by-step advice that highlights parts of your screen, this feature works silently in the background to enhance productivity. It’s like having a knowledgeable assistant right at your fingertips, ready to guide users through complex tasks without a pause on workflows.

For instance, if you’re stuck on a complex document or photo editing program, Copilot with this update can highlight the exact buttons to click or even steps users can take. This screen-aware AI blends seamlessly into everyday workflows, helping transform static assistance into dynamic and visual help.

Also adding to these capabilities is Copilot Actions, a ground-breaking leap into Agentic AI. This development empowers Copilot to autonomously perform multi-step tasks on users’ behalf, like sorting files, booking appointments, or editing images. As a result of Microsoft’s privacy-centered approach, users will see the actions taken by Copilot in real time and can intervene anytime.

Microsoft’s objective to redefine the Windows operating system around AI is clear. However, the competition with other leading tech giants who are at the helm of the AI race is also fierce.

For Microsoft, its advantage may lie in a tight integration with Windows and other business software like Office 365, which may further give space for Copilot to solve real users problems that are directly inside the work environment they find themselves in.
