The cybersecurity industry is currently moving through one of its busiest periods for mergers and acquisitions as many companies race to strengthen their AI capabilities.
New data from Momentum Cyber has shown that 219 cybersecurity acquisitions were completed in the first half of 2026, putting the sector on course for its highest annual deal count ever recorded.
According to the cybersecurity-focused investment bank, the first six months of the year produced a record pace of dealmaking, with June emerging as the strongest month so far. The firm expects the current momentum to continue through the rest of 2026, potentially pushing the market to about 438 acquisitions by year end.
AI Security Becomes the Fastest Growing Target
One of the biggest drivers behind the surge is AI security.
Momentum Cyber recorded 29 AI security acquisitions during the first half of 2026. That is a sharp increase from the 10 AI security deals completed throughout all of 2025.
The figures show that companies are no longer simply investing in AI. They are acquiring businesses that can help secure AI models, AI agents, machine identities, and sensitive enterprise data.
And as businesses deploy AI across their operations, cybersecurity vendors are also expanding beyond traditional network and endpoint protection, as many now see AI governance and AI risk management as essential parts of their platforms.
Bigger Companies are Buying Strategic Capabilities
The year’s largest deal arrived in June when Accenture agreed to acquire industrial cybersecurity firms Dragos, NetRise, and runZero in a transaction valued at about $4.175 billion. It marked the first cybersecurity acquisition worth more than $1 billion in 2026 and highlighted the growing demand for technologies that protect critical infrastructure and operational technology.
Technology companies have accounted for about 88% of disclosed cybersecurity acquisition spending this year. Rather than buying products with overlapping features, many tech companies are targeting other companies that strengthen their long-term security architecture and expand AI capabilities.
Security services remained the most active acquisition category with 82 deals during the first half of the year. Risk and compliance followed with 32 deals, while AI security ranked close behind with 29 transactions.
Why The Market is Moving so Quickly
Industry analysts say the acquisition wave reflects a broader shift in enterprise security priorities.
Companies are adopting AI tools at a rapid pace while also facing more sophisticated cyber threats. This has, in turn, increased demand for technologies that can secure AI applications, monitor machine identities, and protect sensitive information moving through AI systems.
“The data from the first half tells a clear story of an industry aggressively restructuring itself around long-term utility,” said Eric McAlpine, Founder and CEO of Momentum Cyber. “We are witnessing a sharp bifurcation where subscale or undifferentiated point solutions are struggling to find a footing, while scaled, platform-aligned vendors are commanding serious premiums.”
A Record Year is Within Reach
Although total disclosed deal value remains below the highs reached in 2025, the number of transactions continues to climb. Momentum Cyber’s data suggests that if the current pace continues, 2026 will finish with the highest number of cybersecurity acquisitions the firm has ever tracked.
For cybersecurity companies, buying specialized firms has become one of the fastest ways to meet customer demand and prepare for the next generation of digital threats.
