Big numbers may dominate headlines, but a scene unfolding in Visakhapatnam, southern India, holds the potential to reshape both national infrastructure and the global AI landscape. Google, through its parent company Alphabet, is committing $15 billion over the period of five years, from 2026 to 2030, to build its largest artificial intelligence (AI) hub outside of the United States.

Beyond the sheer scale of the $15 billion investment, this project highlights the partnership and larger ambitions of Google and India to strengthen the world’s most populous country’s standing in the global AI ecosystem and usher in a new era of innovation powered by sustainable, cutting-edge technology.

The monumental project, which will be located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, will combine ultramodern data center campuses, tailored AI infrastructure, substantial renewable energy sources, and fiber-optic networks into an integrated technology system.

“This AI hub is a multi-faceted investment combining powerful gigawatt scale data center operations, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network, and has the potential to accelerate AI-driven transformation across every sector,” Google wrote in a blog post.

The AI data-center is designed to deliver an initial capacity of 1 gigawatt to ensure scalable performance, and with the potential to expand to multiple gigawatts as AI demands evolve.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurain emphasized the importance of this AI hub saying, “It’s the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world, outside of the United States.”

This strategic partnership also aligns with the Government of India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision to strengthen and fortify technology capabilities, as well as deepen AI proficiency domestically. Additionally, there’s a further partnership with the Adani Group and Airtel India to bring this project to fruition.

This infrastructure, if successful, will greatly benefit India’s buoyant internet users by improving access to Google’s suite of services and also accelerate adoption of AI-powered tools.

From a technical standpoint, the center will house Google’s proprietary tensor processing units and powerful GPUs designed for AI workloads. These hardware assets will then support core Google services like Youtube and Workspace, along with being the backbone for Google’s Gemini AI models.

Additionally, the AI hub will bring forth significant job creation and skill development in India, with a promise of generating over 180,000 jobs.

The initiative serves as a reminder that the development of AI is not only limited or confined to the U.S., as it is progressively becoming a global movement with the recent entry of India playing a center stage role.

“We believe that by delivering industry-leading AI infrastructure at this scale, we are creating meaningful opportunities for growth and helping to drive a transformative impact for society,” Google said.
