On the 11th of August,  Microsoft patched 398 security problems across Windows and its other products. Most of those problems are routine and Microsoft credited a new AI-powered scanning tool for finding many of them.

However, hackers found a flaw and used it before Microsoft even knew it existed. The flaw lives inside WinSock, a core Windows system that handles network connections.

    Microsoft’s WinSock Problem

The name of the flaw is CVE-2026-68820. Microsoft’s patch targets a Windows driver called afd.sys, which manages network traffic on every Windows machine. It works like a traffic controller for internet connections.

However, a coding mistake inside the driver lets an attacker with some existing access trick it into granting full control. Researchers call the trick a “use-after-free” bug.

To put it simply, the software reuses memory it should have discarded and an attacker slips through that gap. Once successful, the attacker gains “SYSTEM” access, the highest level of control Windows allows. Furthermore, the update covers Windows, Office, Azure, and several other Microsoft products.

Why a Small Bug Carries Big Risk

At first glance, the flaw looks minor. Microsoft rated it “Important” rather than “Critical,” with a modest severity score of 7.0. However, it was noted that afd.sys has drawn skilled attackers before, including nation-state hackers.

In a recent attack, an earlier flaw in the same driver was reportedly used by North Korea’s Lazarus group. This is because attackers rarely use this flaw to break in first. Instead, they use it once already inside a network, turning a small opportunity into full control.

What Security Teams Should Fix First

Now, speed matters the most. Microsoft released a fix the same day it published the update. In addition, CISA immediately added the flaw to its list of known exploited vulnerabilities. This listing triggers strict, government-mandated deadlines for remediation.

First, IT teams should install Microsoft’s patch for CVE-2026-68820 right away, since delay only helps attackers. There is one catch, though. Installing the update alone will not finish the job. The fix touches a core system driver, so every patched machine also needs a reboot.

Next, teams should check their network for unusual privilege changes or odd local activity. Two more disclosed flaws deserve quick follow-up. One sits in the Windows User Profile Service, and another sits in a Windows container driver.

Finally, teams should prioritize systems exposed directly to networks. DNS servers and remote access systems carry the highest real risk. Everything else can wait for the normal monthly patch cycle. Ultimately, August’s flood of fixes shows that attackers only need one overlooked flaw to cause serious damage.
