    China’s fiber network has reached a major milestone after researchers transmitted 51.3 terabits per second across 206.5 kilometers without using a single signal repeater. However, the transmission speed tells only part of the story.

    More importantly, the demonstration proved that data can travel long distances while avoiding expensive signal regeneration equipment. 

    How China’s Fiber Network Achieved 51.3 Terabits Per Second Without Signal Repeaters

    Researchers conducted the demonstration on a 206.5-kilometer commercial optical link. The project brought together Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company, China Telecom, and optical technology company Dekoli. 

    Together, the partners transmitted 51.3 terabits of data every second without installing a single signal repeater along the route. Traditional fiber networks rely on repeaters to restore weakened optical signals during long-distance transmission. However, every repeater increases installation costs, electricity use, and maintenance demands. 

    Because of this, removing repeaters could simplify future network designs while improving operational efficiency. Although engineers completed the trial under controlled conditions, the result demonstrated a practical direction for next-generation optical communications.

    The Hollow-Core Fiber Technology Behind the Breakthrough

    Unlike conventional optical fiber, hollow-core fiber guides light through an air-filled center instead of solid glass. With this, light travelled with lower delay while encountering fewer physical limitations.

    In addition, hollow-core fiber reduces nonlinear optical effects that normally restrict very high-capacity transmissions. Engineers also optimized wavelengths and optical amplification to preserve signal quality throughout the entire route. Therefore, the system maintained record-breaking throughput without intermediate signal regeneration.

    Scientists have investigated hollow-core fiber for years. Even so, successful demonstrations on commercial optical links remained uncommon until recently. The latest achievement moves the technology closer to practical deployment beyond laboratory testing.

    Why China’s Fiber Network Could Redefine Global Internet Infrastructure

    Global internet traffic continues growing at a rapid pace. At the same time, operators need greater capacity without sharply increasing infrastructure costs. Therefore, long-distance transmission technologies attract growing attention across the telecommunications industry.

    A network requiring fewer repeaters could consume less power, reduce maintenance needs, and simplify long-distance deployments. Moreover, operators could dedicate more resources to expanding network capacity instead of supporting additional regeneration sites.

    What the Demonstration Means for AI, Cloud Computing, and Future Networks

    Artificial intelligence depends on moving enormous amounts of data between powerful computing clusters. Likewise, cloud providers continue expanding data centers to support growing digital services. Because of this, future optical networks must deliver greater capacity with minimal delay.

    China’s demonstration suggests hollow-core fiber could help meet future networking demands with a simpler long-distance architecture. Nevertheless, widespread adoption will still depend on manufacturing costs, long-term reliability, and compatibility with existing fiber infrastructure.

    Even so, transmitting 51.3 terabits per second across more than 200 kilometers without signal repeaters marks an important milestone. Rather than just setting a record, the achievement demonstrates a realistic path toward more capable global internet infrastructure.
