GlobalFoundries (GF), the third-largest semiconductor foundry by revenue, has announced a major $16 billion investment to expand its semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities across its facilities in New York and Vermont.

GF’s investment response comes at a pivotal point driven by an increased demand for next-gen semiconductors designed for power efficiency and high-bandwidth performance across data centers, communications infrastructure, and AI-enabled devices.

GlobalFoundries said during the announcement on June 4, that the move comes in response to President Trump’s effort to build more chips domestically and keep up with the booming demand for more artificial intelligence (AI) products.

“GlobalFoundries’ investment is a great example of the return of United States manufacturing for critical semiconductors,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in response to the announcement. “President Trump has made it a fundamental objective to bring semiconductor manufacturing home to America. Our partnership with GlobalFoundries will secure U.S. semiconductor foundry capacity and technology capabilities for future generations.”

According to a press release by GF, the company will be collaborating with major technology companies such as Apple, SpaceX, AMD, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., NXP, and GM that are committed to reshoring semiconductor production to the U.S. and diversifying global supply chains. The partnership between these companies and GF to support production of U.S. made chips underscores GF’s role as a trusted supplier of essential semiconductors and a key enabler of supply chain security.

    What the $16 Billion Covers

GF’s commitment breaks down into: according to Investopedia, GF will be utilizing $13 billion to expand and modernize its current facilities in New York and Vermont and fund its recently launched New York Advanced Packaging and Photonics Center, and $3 billion will be dedicated to advanced research and development initiatives focused on

    • Chip packaging technologies, which are crucial for integrating diverse chip functionalities and enhancing overall chip performance.
    • Silicon photonics: A technology with immense potential for high-speed data transfer and applications in quantum computing.
    • Next-generation GaN (gallium nitride) technologies: Offering superior power efficiency compared to traditional silicon, vital for AI and power applications.

Impact on the Global Semiconductor Landscape

GlobalFoundries, while ranking third in the semiconductor landscape in terms of revenue, lags behind giants like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Samsung, and Intel in terms of advanced node manufacturing capacity.

However, the step taken with this investment will solidify its position as a crucial supplier for the automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics sectors. The company’s focus on reshoring (manufacturing within the borders of the U.S.) and diversifying the supply chain is a significant development in an industry historically concentrated in Asia.

GlobalFoundries’ $16 billion investment is a step in the ongoing global efforts to build more resilient and geographically diversified semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, signaling a strong commitment to fostering innovation and securing critical technology infrastructure within the United States.

According to a report by Infosys, the global semiconductor industry is projected to grow at a 9% compound annual rate, reaching over $1 trillion in annual revenue by 2030. This has given companies worldwide incentives to make investments in new fabrication plants, indicating the critical role semiconductors play in nearly every modern technology, from smartphones to military hardware.
