Google I/O 2025 delivered a buffet of cutting-edge announcements that reinforced the tech giant’s commitment and goals for artificial intelligence, next-generation Android development, and immersive technologies.

The event, which took place on May 20-21, 2025, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, unveiled major updates across the Google ecosystem, headlined by the new Gemini 2.5 model, graced with the debut of Android 16, and gave an ambitious leap into spatial computing with Android XR.

    Google I/O 2025: Top Announcements

    1. Gemini 2.5: Google’s Next-Gen AI Model

Google unveiled its latest addition to the Gemini family, Gemini 2.5, a thinking model capable of reasoning before responding. The Gemini 2.5 is able to effectively analyze information, draw logical conclusions, and incorporate context and nuance to make informed decisions.

Gemini 2.5 also offers superior multimodal support, as it can handle text, images, audio, and video in one seamless interface. The Gemini 2.5 Pro version is available for users in the Gemini app and for developers in the Gemini API via Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.

    1. Google Search in AI Mode

Google’s Search now features an AI mode, transforming traditional search into a deep search to discover more of what the internet has to offer and find hyper-relevant content that matches the question asked.

The Deep Search feature is capable of issuing out hundreds of searches, reasoning across disparate pieces of information, and creating expert-level, fully cited reports in minutes, saving time for research.

Google’s AI mode will not be restricted to this capacity alone; it will also possess live capabilities for real-time help, serve as a virtual assistant, and be a new AI shopping partner to find the perfect products.

The search feature was first announced in March 2025 as an experiment and is currently available to residents in the US.

    1. AI-Powered Tools for Creators

The I/O 2025 event was not without a range of tools for the creatives. We have the Veo 3, Google’s model for generating video with audio. It is available in the Gemini app.

Imagen 4, Google’s image generation model, is capable of generating images up to 2k resolution. It is available in the Gemini app and Whisk.

Flow, an AI filmmaking tool that allows users to create animations and films with the control of characters, scenes, and styles. iFlow is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra Plan users in the US.

Lyra 2, a music AI sandbox capable of arranging vocals to make it sound like a solo singer or a full choir. The Lyra RealTime model allows users to interactively create, control, and perform music in real time. Lyra 2 is available for creators through YouTube Shorts and enterprises in Vertex AI. Lyra RealTime is available via the Gemini API in Google Studio and Vertex AI.

    Android 16: Key Updates

The unveiling of Android 16 during the event was an important milestone in the world of mobile operating systems. Key highlights include:

    • Material 3 Expressive: The newest addition to Google’s open-source design system “material design,” Material 3 Expressive is its latest version. This model focuses on emotional UX, making it more engaging, intuitive, desirable, and personal for users.
    • Advanced Protection Security Suite: The security suite enhancement safeguards users against online threats, harmful apps, and insecure connections. With features like device safety, app protection, and intruder detection, this is an update made for high-risk users susceptible to data theft.
    • Enhanced Camera and Media Capabilities: Introducing Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, support for UltraHDR images in HEIC file format, and manual control of specific exposure aspects while utilizing auto-exposure algorithms.
    • Linux Terminal Expansion: Android 16 expands the “Linux Terminal” feature associated with Android 15, which allows users to connect to Debian systems within a virtual machine to execute commands and operations, bringing Android closer to a desktop-like experience.

Android XR: Venturing into Extended Reality

Google unveiled its very own Android XR glasses prototype equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers to interpret the user’s surroundings and provide assistance through AI like Gemini. Developed in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm, the AR-powered glasses are capable of showing directions during a walk, translating signs and menus in real-time, and interacting with Gemini AI hands-free.

Google I/O 2025 has set the stage for a future where AI and immersive technologies are an integral part of our daily lives by offering enhanced experiences across devices and platforms. It also shows the company’s commitment to a future where digital experiences are more intuitive, secure, and interconnected.
