Huawei Nigeria has recently unveiled a state-of-the-art Innovation Center in Lagos, marking a milestone in the 25 years that Huawei Technologies have established its presence in Africa’s most populous country.

According to the global tech giant, the Innovation Center, launched during the inaugural Huawei Day Nigeria 2025 in May themed “Accelerating Industrial Intelligence,” represents a strategic initiative and serves as a collaborative space designed to bring together diverse stakeholders from across Nigeria’s technology ecosystem. In turn, it will create an environment where innovation can flourish through partnerships between government agencies, educational institutions, private enterprises, and technology professionals.

More importantly, this center is positioned to accelerate co-creation and innovation across critical sectors that form the backbone of Nigeria’s economy – finance, energy, education, public administration – while strengthening and helping with Nigeria’s transition from a technology consumer to an active creator and exporter of digital solutions.

The inaugural event had important dignitaries in attendance: Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Dr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, The Executive Governor of Lagos state, represented by Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos state; Dr. Peter Zhou, President of Huawei Data Storage Product Line; and Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), amongst others.

Dr. Tijani lauded the initiative as a strategic step towards building indigenous capacity in technology development in Nigeria. “This innovation center launched today is an important one for us as a government because it offers us the opportunity to co-create the path to our future, ensuring that Nigeria is not just a consumer of technology, but also a nation that can partner with the best companies in the world to develop technology solution that suits our needs,” the minister said.

Huawei’s Innovation Center launch is fundamentally linked to the company’s broader infrastructure investments in Nigeria, particularly the groundbreaking introduction of Nigeria’s hyperscale local cloud service in December 2024. As such, this technological foundation provides the Innovation Center with robust capabilities to develop and deploy cutting-edge solutions vis-à-vis cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

Chris Lu, CEO of Huawei Nigeria, described the center as a gateway to an “AI-driven era,” powered by localized cloud infrastructure and sustainable energy solutions.

“AI is not the technology of the future, it is today, it is now,” Lu said. “To develop industrial intelligence, we need advanced AI-ready digital infrastructure, from ubiquitous connectivity to modern data centers to cloud. On cloud service, the launch of Nigeria’s first Hyperscale Local Cloud by Huawei ensures that businesses can store their data safely in Nigeria, with ultra-low latency, and 24/7 service support.”

Beyond infrastructure, Huawei Nigeria is also doubling down on talent development. Programs like DigiTruck, which delivers mobile digital literacy training, complements government efforts such as the 3 Million Technical talents (3MTT) initiative. These efforts from the tech giant aim to bridge the skills gap and empower Nigerians to leverage emerging technologies like AI and IoT.

For Nigeria, this vision translates to job creation, increased foreign investment, and a stronger position in the global digital economy. With sustained partnerships like this one, and a focus on indigenous needs, Huawei’s Innovation Center could develop into one of the blueprint for Africa’s tech-driven future.
