Chinese EV manufacturers are rapidly capturing global attention with their display of new EV models at the Shanghai auto show, which took place from April 23 to May 2, 2025. The race is on to challenge Tesla’s supremacy in the global EV market.

Leading EV makers like BYD, Xpeng, and Nio are tipping the scales against Tesla’s expensive luxury cars in the EV race in terms of affordability, and technological advancements. Let’s look at major highlights from the Shanghai auto show.

    BYD

    Yangwang U8L & U8

U8L, the luxury version of the Yangwang U8 off-road SUV features a three-row, six-seat layout; BYD’s God’s Eye advanced driver assistance system (ADAS); a water flotation system, which is present in the U8 model; and a 24-carat gold badge (not included in the U8 model).

It is also expected to have similar powertrain specs to the U8 model, which has a 2.0T engine, four permanent magnet synchronous motors that deliver a peak torque of 1280 Nm, a 49.05 kWh Blade LFP battery, a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 200 km/h.

    Yangwang U9

Tagged BYD’s EV supercar, this car boasts of a top speed of 391.94 km/h, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 2.386 seconds. It utilizes four independent electric motors, giving the U9 1,300 hp and a maximum torque of 180 N-m.

It also has the DisSus-X Intelligent Body Control System, which has the ability to adjust the car’s suspension with significant force in different situations like braking, acceleration, cornering, and speed bumps.

The Yangwang U9 currently sells at over $230,870.

    Sealion 05

The Sealion 5 is a part of BYD’s Sealion series, which specifically targets the overseas market. The Sealion series is also known for its hybrid nature; however, the Sealion 5 is all electric, with a maximum range of 520 km, an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster, a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, BYD’s God’s Eye C ADAS, a 60.9 kWh battery, and a peak power of 215 hp. It is currently at a price range of $16,240-$19,000.

BYD also featured a megawatt flash charger for EVs, boasting of a charging current of 1000 A and a charging rate of 10C, with a charging speed of 1 second for 2 km.

    Xpeng

    Xpeng G6

The G6 boasts of 81 improvements when compared to older models of Xpeng. It has a redesigned front fascia, a full-width galaxy light wing LED strip, the Xpeng logo relocated to the hood, and the addition of a distinctive blue light indicator for the intelligent driving system.

The interior has a refreshed layout, with a centerpiece of a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and front seats with ventilation, heating, and massage functions.

The G6 has a 5C ultra-fast charging battery capacity from 10 to 80% in under 20 minutes, a single motor configuration powered by an 800V platform that delivers a maximum output of 218 kW, and an acceleration speed from 0 to 100 km/h of 4.1 s.

    NIO

    NIO ET7

The ET7 is a premium executive sedan known for its long range of 1,000 km, a 150 kWh battery, and a dual-motor system that accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

The ET7 boasts of a golden wheelbase-to-length ratio of 60%, a watchtower sensor layout designed for intelligent driving, a NIO Link PanoDisplay for each seat suitable for video conferencing, a 71.4 surround sound system, an electrochromic roof, and an enhanced 16.3-inch head-up display (HUD).

It also boasts of a premium interior with business-class standard seats that focus on luxury and comfort. The ET7 sells in the range of $59,000 to $64,000.

NIO also showcased its battery-swapping technology, where at designated spots EV users can swap out their depleted battery for a fully charged one within 5 minutes.

    NIO Firefly

The Firefly is a high-end compact 5-seater EV for urban users. Despite its size on the outside, it offers ample space with a bench seat concept combined with a flat floor to allow users to slide from one side of the EV to the other easily.

It has a panoramic sunroof, a vehicle app that allows users to interact with their EV through smartphones, and an on-board smart AI assistant, “Lumo.” It has a total capacity of 42.1 kWh, which delivers a range of 330 km.

    It sold for $16,640.

The show also featured the Zeekr Flagship 9X SUV (Zeekrs’ first hybrid), XPeng P7 sedan, GWM Twin-turbo V8, GWM Hi4-Z hybrid, Leopard 5 & 8, and more.

EV technology is rapidly growing in the Chinese market and has long since caught Musk’s attention, to which he said in a CNBC article in January 2024, “Frankly, I think if there are no trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most companies in the world.”

The Chinese EV market is doing quite well for itself regardless of trade restrictions. Not only is it growing exponentially on a domestic scale in China, but Chinese EV brands are also gaining a foothold in the Australian and European markets.
