In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, access to powerful AI models has become a cornerstone for innovation across industries. OpenAI has long been a dominant player in this space, offering cutting-edge models like GPT-3 and GPT-4 that have revolutionized natural language processing, content generation, and more. However, there is high costs and computational demands associated with OpenAI’s solutions. Enter DeepSeek, a promising contender that combines affordability, speed, and performance to democratize AI access.

The arrival of DeepSeek AI stunned the AI community. DeepSeek as a company was founded in 2023 by a hedge fund billionaire, Liang Wenfeng in China. DeepSeek is a research lab that operates under the rubric of High-Flyer, which is a Chinese hedge fund worth over seven billion USD ($7B).

DeepSeek is an advanced AI platform specializing in natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning. It provides users with tools to generate high-quality text, automate workflows, and build intelligent applications. All these, at a fraction of the cost of other AI platforms.

DeepSeek was released to the public on the 10th of January, 2025, and is said to be very cost efficient  by claiming to have trained it’s models at an alarmingly low price of $6m compared to an average of 80 million dollars ($80m) by competitors like Open AI, Gemini, etc. This is a game changer that caught the attention of tycoons and elites like Trump, Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO), Marc Benioff (Salesforce CEO), and many more.

Here’s a quick comparison between the pricing model of DeepSeek and OpenAI

    FeatureDeepSeekOpenAI
Base Pricing ModelYes (monthly subscription for API access)Yes (pay-per-use based on API usage)
Free TierYes (limited access to models)Yes (limited access to GPT-3 and other APIs)
    Price per 1,000 Tokens (Text Generation)$0.02 per 1,000 tokens$0.06 per 1,000 tokens (GPT-3)
    1,000 Tokens (Code Generation)$0.05 per 1,000 tokens$0.12 per 1,000 tokens (Codex)
Enterprise PricingCustom plans based on usageCustom plans based on enterprise needs
Additional CostsOptional costs for advanced AI models and servicesAdditional costs for premium access to higher models

What does “per token” refer to in the above table?

In the context of AI models like DeepSeek and OpenAI, a token represents a unit of text. Tokens can be as short as one character or as long as one word (or more). Here are a few examples:

    • “Hello” is one token.
    • “I’m here to assist you!” consists of six tokens.

For pricing, both DeepSeek and OpenAI charge based on the number of tokens processed during text generation or code generation. This approach makes it easier to measure and manage the costs based on the text length and complexity.

DeepSeek offers a more cost-effective solution with its open-source models and lower pricing, while OpenAI provides high-performance models with a pay-per-use model

DeepSeek is a proof of why AI (Aritificial Intelligence) is here to stay considering that it achieved significant milestones in a short time, quickly gaining international attention and recognition. DeepSeek claims to achieve high performance with relatively lower computational resources compared to ChatGPT. This efficient use of resources contributes to its speed advantage.

DeepSeek is now available for public use. Interested users can sign up on the platform’s website and explore its features. With its competitive pricing and robust capabilities, DeepSeek is a promising choice for AI-driven solutions.
