OpenAI, the creator of the world’s most used AI-powered chatbot (ChatGPT), is set to launch its major artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, in August 2025, The Verge reports.
This eagerly awaited release is expected to mark an advance in the development of AI technology, as it promises to deliver smarter and more versatile capabilities than any previous OpenAI’s models.
GPT-5 is the latest version of OpenAI’s generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models. These types of models, also trained on large language models (LLMs), are designed to understand and generate human-like language, and even process images and audio recordings.
GPT-5 is special because it is reported to combine multiple AI capabilities and models into one single, powerful and “unified” model. In this case, the o3 models, powerful for reasoning, as well as the 4o models, which are multi-modal LLMs, are both combined in GPT-5 to produce an even better result. And as such, it means that it can handle simple questions, complex reasoning, multi-modal input (text, images, audio) and task execution all at a go.
This is unlike previous versions (o3 and 4o) that could only handle one task at a time, which means users were separating models for specific tasks. But with the introduction of GPT-5, ChatGPT users can now do everything at once, as the new model eliminates the need to switch between different AI models for reasoning, conversation, or image understanding. GPT-5 also automatically decides how to handle each request or prompt, therefore making it more user-friendly and efficient.
The unification of both multimodal capabilities and improved reasoning as improvements in the model makes it more attractive to AI users. It also makes the race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), a system capable of solving any human-level intellectual task, more intense; a race that OpenAI wants to win as much as possible.
“We’re truly excited to not just make a net new great frontier model, we’re also going to unify our two series,” OpenAI’s Head of Developer Experience, Romain Huet said. “So the breakthrough of reasoning in the O-series and the breakthroughs in multi-modality in the GPT-series will be unified, and that will be GPT-5.”
According to multiple reports, including statements from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, GPT-5 is expected to launch in early August 2025. However, the AI giant has a history of shifting release dates to perhaps address last-minute improvements or challenges.
This release comes after the February 2025 launch of GPT-4.5, which was codenamed “Orion.” It served as a transitional model that has prepared users for GPT-5.
