In the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence, another bold step has been taken as xAI Grok 4 is officially live. The launch was announced during a late-night livestream on Wednesday (July 9), where Elon Musk called the Grok 4 “the smartest AI in the world.”
For months the public has been getting teasers about Grok 4, and it’s finally here. This release is a big step forward for Musk’s AI project and opens the door to a new chapter in the AI race, which is getting more and more competitive.
Designed to rival models from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic, Grok 4 is more than a technical upgrade; it’s a statement. So, what’s the fuss about Grok 4? Let’s break it down.
What is Grok 4?
Grok 4 is the latest iteration of xAI’s conversational AI model, built on the Grok architecture. Previous versions are the Grok 1, 2, and 3, which were non-reasoning models, with the exception of Grok 3, which had both reasoning and non-reasoning modes.
Grok 4 operates exclusively as a reasoning model, as it fully integrates the xAI proprietary stack (the combination of infrastructure, algorithms, training methods, and deployment system), leverages multi-modal capabilities, and scales reasoning far beyond casual chat. In short, Grok 4 is smarter, faster, and more context-aware.
Grok 4 has a dual-variant architecture, the generalist and premium models. The generalist model (normal version) is engineered for tasks like content creation, writing, translation, coding, in-depth research, and general logic reasoning and problem solving.
The Grok 4 Heavy (premium tier), a more powerful version designed to handle complex, postgraduate-level reasoning and problem-solving, will be available only under the Super Grok Heavy plan by xAI.
A Smarter, Sharper Chatbot
Unlike its predecessors, Grok 4 is able to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4.5, Google’s Gemini 1.5, and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5. In a way, Grok 4 is also able to give these other models a run for their money. Let’s explore the features and benchmarks that make Grok 4 so unique.
- Advanced Reasoning and Problem-Solving
Grok 4 is a reasoning model, which means it is more focused on deeper, more accurate problem-solving than quick analytical responses.
Grok 4 is designed to generate solutions from fundamental truths rather than recognizing patterns from its training data. This feature has given the model a rebellious streak, as it can offer witty, sarcastic, and even rebellious answers to questions that might seem controversial and too sensitive for other AI.
The model also outperforms its predecessor, Grok 3, in difficult academic and reasoning tests.
For instance, in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), Grok 4 achieved a perfect 100, compared to Grok 3’s 52.2%. In the Graduate-level Physics Answering (GPQA), Grok 4 scored 87% against Grok 3’s 75.4%.
In the Humanity’s Last Exam, created by the Center of AI Safety and Scale AI, which consists of 2,500 broad-range questions designed to challenge the most advanced AI models, Grok 4 scored 44.4% (using the heavy version) and 25.4% on the normal version, ahead of Gemini 2.5 Pro’s 21.6% and OpenAI’s o3 21%.
- Multimodal Capabilities
Grok 4 supports text and vision modalities from launch, unlike the Grok 3 that was text-based. Image generation and video capabilities are functions that will be added as time goes on.
- Specialized Coding Model
Grok 4 has a specialized coding model designed for developers. It offers better coding assistance, real-time code generation, advanced debugging, and intelligent code completion.
- Real-time Data Integration
With access to real-time data from Musk’s ecosystem, including X, Tesla, and SpaceX platforms, Grok 4 is able to provide more current and up-to-date information, a capability Grok 3 lacked.
- Improved Voice Mode
The Grok 4 model comes with an advanced voice mode called “Eve.” When compared to other AI models like OpenAI and Gemini, its voice model sounds more personal and calm. The voice mode, Eve, is a British speaker that can alternate between singing and whispering, effectively mimicking human-like emotions.
- Large Context Window
Grok 4 has a significantly larger context window, which means it can process and understand much longer pieces of text or code at once. Grok 4 is capable of handling 256,000 tokens compared to Grok 3’s 131,072 tokens.
Availability and Access to Grok 4
Grok 4 was made available immediately after its release on July 9. However, access comes with a price for both individuals and businesses.
For end-users, the general mode (standard package) is available through a “SuperGrok” subscription on X. This mode can be directly accessed on the X app or on grok.com for a standalone interface, and it costs $30 per month. The Heavy mode (Premium Tier) costs $300 monthly. It is offered through a “SuperGrok Heavy” subscription.
Grok 4 API access for developers and businesses can be accessed at x.ai/api, which allows you to request developer access. Input tokens are priced at $3 per 1 million tokens, and output tokens at $15 per 1 million tokens.
Final Thoughts
“It is really remarkable to see the advancement of artificial intelligence and how quickly it is evolving. AI is advancing vastly faster than any human,” Elon Musk said on the livestream on Wednesday.
Grok 4 is truly a marvel of AI evolution for the Musk empire and the AI industry at large. As developers and users begin to explore its full potential, we can expect to see a fresh wave of innovation and application emerge, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with artificial intelligence.
