Apptronik Gets $350M To Build Better Humanoid Robots

With the growing demand for automation industries and robotics innovation in industries like manufacturing and logistics, it is no wonder that Apptronik closed a $350 million Series A funding round that was co-led by B capital and Capital Factory in conjunction with Google.

Apptronik, an Austin-based human-centred robotics company that started out of the Human Robotics Lab at the University of Texas at Austin wants to expand its team to meet the growing demand for next-generation humanoid robots. Of course, it now gets to do that on a large scale with this funding.

Since its inception, Apptronik has developed over 15 robotic systems including the NASA Valkyrie. It was through a project that would become Valkyrie II that paved the way for a commercial product that eventually became Apollo. Apollo, with the aim to become the “iPhone of robots,” was designed to be user-friendly and perform industrial and logistics duties.

The focal point for this funding is to help Apptronik expand the deployment of Apollo, its flagship AI-humanoid robot, on a large scale to industries in manufacturing and logistics, as well as industries providing services in healthcare and elder care. While Apollo already exists in a competitive market with other companies developing humanoid robots such as Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, Apollo is set to innovate faster than before with this funding.

In the press release by Apptronik, it is emphasized that the $350 million investment will allow them carry-out three major activities: “Accelerate the development of next-generation humanoid robots; Push the boundaries of humanoid robot design and development; and Meet skyrocketing customer demand.” The funding will play a crucial role in developing and deploying Apollo to transform and meet the specific needs of sectors like logistics, manufacturing, retail, and healthcare.

It is important to highlight that Apptronik’s impressive achievements to date were made possible with just the $28 million previous funding, and this testifies to the Austin-based company’s ability to maximize impact with limited resources while demonstrating a grand level of capital efficiency.

In fact, it plays a role in the latest funding round as there’s a growing confidence in Apptronik’s mission to build next-generation human-like robots. Howard Morgan, Chair and General Partner of B Capital says, “we back the most innovative founders, and there’s no exception here. Jeff and the team are redefining robotics while reshaping our world for the better.”

Gordon Daugherty, Capital Factory Chairman and first outside board director of Apptronik, also says, “we continue to be proud investors in Apptronik because we believe they’re not just building robots – they’re setting a new standard in human-centered AI. Apollo’s refreshingly friendly and approachable design perfectly reflects the company’s vision for humanoid robots that benefit businesses, individuals, and humanity.”

Apptronik’s big funding round shows a trend towards robots in many industries. Companies are facing challenges like labor shortages, safety concerns, and increasing costs, as such, human-like robots are becoming the next solution. This is why Apollo is important – it can handle risky and repetitive tasks and work with humans to improve productivity.

So, with this funding, Apptronik is set to stay at the forefront of this technological improvement and encourage more businesses to adopt robotic solutions and create an even level of collaboration between human workers and humanoids. The future of humanoid robots like Apollo is bright, as it has the potential to transform industries across the globe.
